About the music

JS Bach Concerto for 2 Violins in D minor, BWV 1043
The interplay between the soloists in Bach’s Double Violin Concerto is like listening in on a conversation between two old friends. It moves from spirited and joyful conversation in the first movement, to poignant reminiscence in the extraordinarily beautiful second movement and finally good-natured teasing in the sometimes frenzied but always playful cat and mouse chase of the third movement.

Grace Williams Elegy for Strings
A quiet and reflective elegy from the Welsh composer Grace Williams, whose music was infused with the sounds of her homeland and her deep connection to the sea.

Henry Purcell Fantasias
A swan song for the viol consort which was fast falling out of fashion when Purcell wrote these Fantasias. Written as music to be played amongst friends, these short, free-flowing pieces revel in crunchy dissonances, hauntingly beautiful melodies and interludes of joviality.

Michael Tippett arr. Peter Manning Time Past, Time Present, Time Future: slow movements from String Quartets 1, 2 and 3 arranged for string orchestra
Arranged by Chromatica Orchestra’s Founding Artistic Director Peter Manning from the slow movements of Tippets first three string quartets, this piece is filled with bold, lush harmonies and expansive melodies that were the trademark of this composer who used his music to communicate his deeply humanistic view of the world.

““Tess Jackson has everything it takes to succeed as a conductor – engaging manner, clear gestures, centred authority.”
