About the music

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Serenade in D major ‘Haffner’, K. 250
Mozart’s ‘Haffner Serenade’, named for the family that commissioned it, is really peak Mozart – energetic and spirited, elegant and graceful, it dazzles and sparkles in a way that betrays the fact that it was written to be used as background music while guests enjoyed the lavish wedding celebrations of Elisabeth Haffner to Franz Xaver Späth.

Béla Bartók Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta
Another work representing the pinnacle of its composer’s work, this piece was an instant hit after its first performance, receiving over 50 performances in its first year. Its novel combination of instruments, its gripping folk-music inspired rhythms and hauntingly beautiful, atmospheric melodies feel both ancient and modern at the same time.

“There is an almost palpable forcefield of energy around Peter Manning...his relish for a challenge is voracious.”

Songs and Dances

When words run out, we turn to music to tell the story. We sing of love and heartbreak, we dance in joy and celebration. With the luminous and expressive voice of Lotte Betts-Dean and youthful energy of our players, Eastern European folk melodies and French Baroque dances are reborn in three richly coloured 20th-century masterpieces that are moving, raw, spirited and beautiful.
